How traditional craftsmanship enables modern sustainability

At a time when ‘handmade’ and ‘high-tech’ are often positioned as competing values, we think they’re best when they work together. Sustainable practices are nothing new for joiners like us who’re dedicated to the principles of traditional craftsmanship.

Minimising waste, choosing the longest-lasting materials, and maximising the longevity of what we build is fundamental to everything we do at Sydenham Bespoke Joinery.

Human Sustainability

As you’d expect, Sydenham Bespoke Joinery’s dedication to sustainability starts with our people. We’ve always treasured our long-serving staff, and because of that some team members have been working with us for over 25 years. The precious skills they pass down to younger ones mean that traditional techniques like jointing and hand-finishing aren’t lost. As a result, the kitchens, bathrooms, built-ins, and windows and doors we design and build last a lot longer than mass-produced, lower-quality products that are pumped out with minimal human input.

Waste reduction

Reducing waste is a key way that we’re using technology to help us be a more sustainable business.

Alongside traditional woodworking tools on our factory floor we also use the latest CNC nesting software and a computer-controlled spindle moulder.

CNC nesting software magically arranges cabinetry components onto a sheet of material like a complex jigsaw puzzle to extract the maximum number of components from every sheet. Hence, less waste material needs to be sent to the landfill, and because we need to buy less material we can pass the lower costs onto our customers.

Our digital spindle moulder brings similar precision to solid timber, shaping and profiling components to within tenths of a millimetre. Having such high accuracy reduces wastage due to re-cuts and offcuts, and also speeds up production which reduces the amount of energy we use in the factory.

Certified timber

Obviously, material selection has a massive contribution to make to sustainability. We guide our customers towards timbers like macrocarpa, which is a locally grown species, and FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC certified imported hardwoods. Certification creates an auditable trail from forest to workshop, which means our customers can trust that the timber in their home has been harvested from responsibly managed, renewable plantations.
